I realized the “Box Stitch Special” pattern could easily be adapted into a wearable scarf or muffler, so I thought I'd go ahead and include it here, and this can be kind of like a free intro into the whole blanket. Please bear in mind the picture is of a folded lap throw and does not show the beginning rows.
PATTERN:
(Leave 6“ to 8” tail at the end of each row.)
Using a foundation hdc to start is recommended but if not follow Rows #1 and #2; if using foundation hdc skip to Row 3 once finished. Place a stitch marker every 24th st for easier counting. Width needs to be divisible by 4 stitches plus 1.
FOUNDATION HDC = Start your yarn on your hook, ch 2, y/o. Put hook through between the back loop and front ch, y/o and pull through (three loops on hook);
*y/o, pull thread through 1st loop; y/o again and bring through all 3 loops (1 hdc made);
y/o, put hook through ch at base of hdc, y/o and pull through (three loops on hook again); repeat from *
Row 3: (box st base) sc attach in 1st st, ch 3; skip 3 st, sc in 5th st; ch 3, skip 3, sc, etc. across, sc in final st, tie off, turn. (c_)
Row 4: (hdc box st) sl st attach, ch 2 (1st hdc here and throughout), 3 hdc in ch 3, *ch 1, 3 hdc in next ch 3; repeat from *, hdc in last st; tie-off, turn. (c_)
Row 5: (box st base) Repeat Row 3. (c_)
Row 6: (hdc box st) Repeat Row 4. (c_)
Row 7: 1-slightly loosen knot tied off in Row 6 and sc into it, then pull thread tight; ch 1, skip next st, *sc in next st, ch 1, ehdc down to Row 4, ch 1; repeat from * to end, sc in last st (original ch 2 from previous row); tie off, turn. (same color as Row 5)
1-the correct placement will make the sc look centered.
Row 8: sc in each of 1st 2 sc, ch 1, *sc in ch 1 sp, ch 1, (in opposite stitches from Row 7), repeat from * then sc in each of last 2 sc; tie off, turn. (c_)
Row 9: (Repeat Row 8, alternated) sc attach in 1st sc, *ch 1, sc in ch 1 sp, repeat from * across, end with sc in sc; tie off, turn. (c_)
Row 10: (box st base) sc attach in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 3 st, sc, repeat from * across to final sc in last st; tie off, turn. (c_)
Row 11: (hdc box st) sl st attach, ch 2, 3 hdc in ch 3, *ch 1, 3 hdc in next ch 3; repeat from *, hdc in last st; tie-off, turn. (c_)
Row 12: (offset shell row) sl st attach, ch 2, 1 hdc in 1st st; *2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in ch 1 space, repeat from * to end, 2 hdc in last st; tie off, turn. (c_)
Row 13: (offset shells in shells) sl st attach, ch 2, 1 hdc in 1st st; ch 1, *3 hdc in ch 1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * across, 2 hdc in final st; tie off, turn. (c_)
Row 14: Like in Row 7, sc attach in the finishing sl st of the previous row, sc in hdc, ch 1 over ch 1 sp in previous row, *sc in each of next 3 hdc, ch 1; repeat from * across, sc in each of last 2 st; tie off, turn. (c_)
Row 15: (sc across) sc attach in 1st st, continue sc across; tie off, turn. (c_)
Note: Stop here and count.
Row 16: (ehdc) sc attach in last sc of previous row, ch 1, *ehdc into ch 1 of Row 13, ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc, ch 1; repeat from * across with an sc in last st; tie off, turn. (same color as row 13)
For scarf, end here and go to finishing rows.
THESE ARE THE FINISHING ROWS:
Row F1: (V-st row) sl st attach, ch 2; skip sc; *V-stitch (1 hdc, ch 1, 1 hdc in ch 1 sp); skip 1 st, hdc; skip again, repeat from *, skip sc, hdc in last st; tie off, turn. (same color as the very first one used)
Row F2: (shell row) sl st attach, ch 2; 2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in each V-stitch across; hdc in last st; tie off, turn. (c_)
Row F3: in starting st of Row F1 sl st attach, ch 2; *3 hdc in ch 1 sp; in space between shells ehdc down into hdc between V-stitches of Row 125; repeat from * across; hdc in last st; tie off. (same color as Row F1)
ENDS: Tie close ends (will usually be 2 or 3 strands) together and trim to desired length.
